Malaysia is becoming a destination for quality higher education, according to Advance HE’s International Partnerships Manager Daniel Sheratte.
The global influence of Advance HE members in Malaysia is evident, he says, by recent events taking place in the country such as the THE Asia Universities Summit hosted by Sunway University, a workshop on AI for members of the Malaysia Senior Fellows Network at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia and the upcoming International Conference on Higher Education Learning and Teaching (ICHELT) 2024 hosted by Curtin University Malaysia.
Innovative approaches to curriculum design and the impact of AI
Advance HE’s Dr Kay Hack joined a panel at the THE Asia Universities Summit in Kuala Lumpur to discuss innovative approaches to curriculum design and skill development, exploring strategies, technologies and philosophies that can transform education and prepare students for the future.
She also delivered the ‘Preparing Graduates for the Era of AI’ workshop at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia which saw more than 100 members of the Malaysia Senior Fellows Network meet to discuss the impact of generative artificial intelligence on higher education, including assessment methods, how students learn, and how and what is taught.
‘A destination for quality higher education’
“Malaysia is truly becoming a destination for quality higher education.
“The wealth of expertise and excellence in academic leadership in Malaysia, made clear at recent THE Summit, the upcoming ICHELT 2024 and the thirst for innovation around AI in teaching and learning makes Malaysia an excellent destination for forward-thinking higher education provision and a key global influencer,” says Daniel Sheratte, International Partnerships Manager at Advance HE.
“Advance HE member institutions in the country are also making their mark by embracing Fellowship as global recognition of excellent teaching practice.
“Sunway University became the first institution in the country to be accredited by Advance HE to award Fellowship via its staff development programme in 2020. Since then, Fellowship has increased by 20% with more than 10 institutions awarding over 300 fellowships across all categories.“
Senior Fellows Network
The Malaysia Senior Fellows Network is spearheading efforts to boost the number of higher education professionals in the country with Fellowship status. Chaired by Annyza Tumar from Sunway University and Deputy Chair, Jaya Kumar from University of Nottingham Malaysia, the group has an action plan to address key challenges for the country’s HE institutions and develop Fellowship pathways with support from Advance HE to achieve its ambitions and priorities.
Annyza Tumar said, “The purpose of The Malaysian Senior Fellows Network is to build a community of like-minded professionals who are all committed to providing quality education to their students and are on an on-going journey of teaching excellence.”
International Conference on Higher Education Learning and Teaching
Another big ticket event in Malaysia which is sure to attract interest globally is the International Conference on Higher Education Learning and Teaching (ICHELT) 2024, hosted by Curtin University Malaysia.
The two-day event, held on 3-4 October 2024 is the premier forum for the presentation of new advances and research in the fields of higher education, as well as those interested in the innovative use of digital technologies for learning, teaching and assessment in any discipline. The 2024 conference theme is ‘Enhancing the Student Experience’ and papers are invited for submission by 2 July 2024.
